Every Sunday, lonely bachelor and refined judge Mladen goes to play chess with his friend, sculptor Fedji. Slowly, he engages in a love affair with Neda, Fedia's wife, and almost invisibly, a love triangle forms. Chess board is the central part of the film, as moves on the board reflect emotions of the characters. In this comedy drama from Yugoslavian director Zvonmir Berkovic that appeared at the Cannes Film Festival in 1967, a young judge relishes his Sunday visits to his artist friend and his student wife. The unmarried judge realizes there is a void in his life, and the student's wife and the judge are attracted to each other, trying but ultimately failing to fight their lustful leanings. Although the two renounce the affair, the friendship of the trio in broken beyond repair.
Screenwriter Zvonimir Berkovic made his debut here as a director with this classic B&W drama. Every Sunday, Mladen (Stevo Zigon) comes to play chess with his friend, the sculptor Fedja and gradually falls into an affair with the sculptor's wife Neda. Soon, the chess-board comes to mirror the emotional lives of the characters.
